Guarana is a plant, which has been used by the Amazonian Indians since time immemorial. Guarana remains a source of strength, beauty, health and joie de vivre for the Indians even today.
Guarana has the botanical name “Paullina cupana” and is a rainforest liana with separate compound leaves. The flowers are yellow and form loose bunches. Each of the three-chambered fruit cases contains seeds which resemble horse chestnuts. The fresh seeds are easy to separate from the fruit after drying. The seeds are washed and then roasted for six hours before use.
The natives discovered this climbing plant with its red fruits and dark seeds long before the first European settlers arrived in the Amazon region. They called it “warana”. This later became guarana. The Amazonian Indians like to consume guarana before arduous work and long marches on foot – it makes them feel strong and lively. No wonder the plant contains caffeine (about 3.5%). This makes guarana the strongest naturally occurring caffeine.
In contrast to the caffeine in coffee and tea, etc., the highly pure caffeine in guarana doesn`t affect either the heart, stomach or circulation. Guaranin is significantly easier to tolerate than “normal” caffeine, because it is absorbed by the body in the intestine.
